Pure Gaming Satisfaction

BobCon 2016: The Return of BobCon

At long last we are pleased to announce the return of BobCon! Three days of pure tabletop gaming satisfaction in a low-key, family-friendly environment. Come, play games, and share with others! For the uninitiated, BobCon is a small annual gaming convention held in Kansas City each year. It's more of a gamer's retreat: no vendors, limited seating, and a very limited entry fee.

When: April 22-24

Where: Oak Tree Inn, Kansas City

Other details will be forthcoming soon, but put us on your calendar, pack your meeples, and get ready to game! Watch for announcements here, Facebook, Twitter, or join our mailing list today!

Gang,

This update's been a long time coming, and I have spoken to many of you personally in the months since BobCon 2014. But not all of you. Due to a number of factors, namely no longer having easy access to the location we've been at for years, and other commitments this Fall, we are moving BobCon to Spring 2016, currently targeting the weekend of April 22-24. This puts us past tax season and Spring Break, and the weather should be great. Many old timers will recall that BobCon started in the Spring and moved to Fall after several years.

So in a way this is a return to roots. In other ways its a new beginning. We're looking for a new venue, so keep your eyes open. The new location needs to be homey, if possible, with a kitchen, and plenty of room to game and congregate but also room for kids to romp around and do their thing. This may take us to a union hall, it may take us to a private residence, it may take us to a community center, it may take us to a campground or lodge. We don't know, and until our duties are finished with  Midwest GameFest in November we won't have much time to think about it. So if you're interested in helping out, shoot us a message below or at bcstaff@bobcon.org.

Did You Say Midwest GameFest? What is That?

Well, I'm glad you asked! Midwest GameFest is new 4-day annual tabletop game convention being held at the fabulous Overland Park Convention Center this November 12-15th. We're helping with the organization and planning of the event, and this seems like a great place to let some good folks know about it who may not have heard!

Midwest GameFest

Check out the Kickstarter and consider backing, sharing, or both! Backer levels start at just $1 and range all the way to main hall naming rights at $1000. It's a brand new event with lots of room to grow, but it won't happen without support from tabletop gamers like you! No pressure, right?

» Back the Kickstarter!

You can get complete details on the event at the MWGF website, along with the latest news. If you're on Facebook you can check out the Facebook page, and if you're on Twitter you can follow MWGF for the latest updates.

If you're a BobCon gamer, consider attending Midwest GameFest. If you're a game creator, consider exhibiting at Midwest GameFest. If you're a BobCon sponsor, consider  sponsoringMidwest GameFest. And if you're concerned about costs, we have lots of volunteer and host/GM opportunities.

If you're an industry insider and would like to be a special guest, shoot us a message at concoordinator@midwestgamefest.org.

Hope to see you there!

Special Guest Cancellation

Lester Smith's Events Canceled Due to Illness

We are very sorry to inform everyone that special guest Lester Smith will be unable to attend due to an illness. Lester had hoped for an improvement in his condition but called it Thursday morning. With the long trip it just didn't make sense. So play a game and drink a toast to Lester's health this weekend while at BobCon. We'll still have copies of Lester's card games to play, so he will definitely be there in spirit! =)

We've updated our on-site chart to reflect these canceled events, but unfortunately our event program was already printed. Make sure and check the on-site event schedule if a question comes up.

Some Online Maps Can't Locate Us

Just a heads-up that some map software (Google and Yahoo we're looking at you) doesn't navigate to the proper location. BobCon starts at noon at the Cove's Clubhouse again this year, north of the river at 8221 N. Overland Drive, Kansas City, MO 64151.

Food Policy Information

Kitchen Closed Saturday

The BobCon kitchen will be closed for an event during most of the day Saturday. There will be an open lunch hour available for everyone to use the kitchen as they need. Before and after that, many of the food items for snacking will be relocated outside the kitchen, near the beverage coolers in the mudroom. Thank you for helping the Cook-Off participants as they work their magic! Note: All BobCon attendees are once again invited to participate in the Farmer's Market Cook-Off judging (e.g. dinner) Saturday night at no cost. The price for free dinner is no kitchen during the day. ;)

Honesty Jars

Many BobCon participants bring potluck meals... giant pots of chili, meatballs, and similar food items to share with others. With increased numbers of attendees, these meals are not stretching as far as in years past. This year we are introducing an "honesty jar." If you eat a meal made by others, and didn't bring a meal to share yourself, please contribute to the honesty jar (a couple of bucks for a bowl of chili, etc.). At the end of the weekend, BobCon staff will try to divide these funds among the individuals who provided meals. Thank you for participating and keeping this tradition sustainable. Note: This does not include simple snacks like bags of chips, which we encourage all participants to bring and share freely. Cooking and heating appliances are available, if you decide to bring your own meals.

Beverages

We've had trouble in recent years where folks would bring a case of drinks for themselves, put the case in the fridge, and all their drinks would magically disappear. This year, feel free to bring your own beverages, in your own iced coolers/containers, but there will be no room in the refrigerator for them (exceptions aside). Note: Beverages will be available for purchase from coolers just outside the clubhouse kitchen. Canned drinks will cost 50 cents each, collected in a nearby honesty jar.

pulsen-logo-large

Its an indie music and rhythm video game being run at BobCon by its developer, Kevin Ghadyani. Players step on indicated spots on a large game mat in time with the music (like Dance Dance Revolution, or sort of like Guitar Hero for your feet). Kids and youngsters of all ages will love it! Check it out: http://pulsengame.com
